Caligari Records put out the first EP of the band / project GROTESQUERIES. I put this aside for a bit and only got back to it today. As soon as I heard it, I wanted to write a short note about it. First things first, this is a 3 song EP with a run time of just about 17 minutes. This is the solo project of Yannis Tranxidis featuring some good guest musicians. Now, coming to the music itself, this is the good kind of generic Death Metal that we all hear and love. Nope, there’s nothing fancy or showy or dissonant or technical here. It is simply a plain, straightforward, heavy slab of old school Death Metal that’s both ugly and engaging at the same time. The sound is your traditional sound with no deviations, the bass thumps your skull while the drums stand behind the line to continue firing in your direction. The guitar work is splendid in some places (track # 3 – ‘Gortician’) and sticks to the basics perfectly on the other times. This is a well written, well produced slab of basic yet punchy Death Metal that you should definitely check out.
