HADOPELAGYAL hail from Leipzig, Germany. They play primitive Black / Atmospheric Death Metal which takes a moment to sink in, but once it does, the denseness simply engulfs you. Think of the ferocity of the first wave of Black Metal and transfer it all to vocals, now take these vocals and thrust them into the background. Once you successfully do that, conjure up a dark ritualistic atmosphere, add to it a sense of occult that tingles your senses and pour it all over the aforementioned vocals. The riffs and the rhythm section are but a menacing blur in the background that punches the layers relentlessly, however it is the mix of it all in the absolute right proportions that gives HADOPELAGYAL a good overall sound. No, it is not groundbreaking in any manner or form, it is simply a really well put together reflection of a tormented mind. Track # 1 ‘Depravity Shall Triumph’ sets in an amazing platform for the things to come. As we move to ‘Intertidal Terrorrealm’ the band dances around the aura of their muddy, dirty and atmospheric take on Death Metal. One can quickly point out the dissonant approach to writing, but I suppose that is the result of wanting to sound like an earthworm in agony under an erupting volcano. Fans of PORTAL must definitely give this a listen, HADOPELAGYAL certainly register on the scale of weird and will immediately appeal to fans of the Australian horror quintet. If you like early DARKTHRONE, the vocals in particular, HADOPELAGYAL offers them as a sludgy mix of Nordic atmosphere. The drumming is absolutely to the point, no gimmicks whatsoever which is a relief. The final point is that it simply works! I like what I hear, I’d be more interested to see if they pull this off live, now, that’ll be something.
