HATEPULSE
In Extenso Letalis

When I received this MCD recently I first of all expected it to be a(nother) brutal Death Metal release, because of the band’s name and the way their logo and coverart looks like. But as soon as opened this little fucker and came across the two corpsepaint wearing dudes on the backside of the CDs booklet, it was perfectly clear to me that my first impression was completely wrong. “Extreme Hate Metal” is printed in there as well and indeed, this sums up the five very raw, yet partly quite atmospheric tunes pretty well. HATEPULSE is a sideproject of E.Kulde, vocalist of WORLD DESTROYER, who once again joined forces here with his partner in crime Vrangsinn (guitars) of CARPARTHIAN FOREST (and also member of WORLD DESTROYER). So this is basically 2/3 of WORLD DESTROYER, simply excluding Nattefrost (who of course is mainly the leading force in CARPARTHIAN FOREST). “In Extenso Letalis” was originally “just” a demo, but Rage Of Achilles luckily noticed the big potential of the songs and the overall high quality of the recordings and (re-)released it on MCD. Good idea, cause even though HATEPULSE won’t reinvent the wheel with their grimly performed, harsh Black Metal outbursts, it’s still very cool and convincing songs for all those of you who prefer their Black Metal to be as basic as possible. In other words, if you enjoy northern acts such as GORGOROTH, CARPATHIAN FOREST, 1349 and the likes you gotta make sure to pick this up also. Not even the use of a drumcomputer (which they named “The Pulse”), nor the additionally incorporared keyboards in the background are turning this into a cheesy mainstream, gothic poisened release. This is raw as fuck, the keyboards are only used to add an eerie atmosphere to certain parts of the songs and the programmed drumming never sounds synthetic at all (well, ok in ‘Dødsferd’ it’s recognizable quite a bit, but what the fuck…). On one hand I don’t see the need to come up with a side project for this (most parts of these tunes could easily have been used in CARPARTHIAN FOREST as well), but then again… as long as there’s material of this superior quality – why not?
