IN MEMORIUM
From Misery... Comes Darkness
(Moribund Records)
44:10min

It’s a bit sad that this album featuring ex – ABAZAGORATH vocalist Nihilist was not released 10 years ago, since with the flood of melodic, atmospheric Black / Death Metal releases back then it could have competed easily, but recorded in 2002 and released just now in 2005 the US-based quintet sounds a little too dated and unspectacular. What bugs me is that this piece of hauntingly dark, at times drivingly fast and in the other moment sinister and doomy Black / Death with some simple but tasteful use of keyboards is executed really good. But still I feel IN MEMORIUM released an album that does not really work today, performing traditional forms of extreme Metal is excellent, but revoking the mid-90s melodic Black / Death trend in Scandinavia is something that might only be appreciated by totally fanatic worshippers of this style and is probably doomed to fail trying to reach a bigger audience. IN MEMORIUM seems like a band that is a result of a musician’s passion to just do what he always wanted to and not giving a chicken shit about the commercial value or level of innovation its recordings have. It’s okay in every aspect in my opinion, though I don’t feel the need to listen to that album again, since my personal interest in this kind of music has completely vanished. However, the aforementioned atmospheric Black / Death diehards out there should maybe give this CD a chance. Visit www.moribundcult.com and check out the sound files you’ll find there!
