Germany’s INFERNAL ASSAULT, consisting of Iron Desecrator (vocals, guitars), Obsessor (bass) and Widowmaker (drums), until now have only delivered one release, an EP entitled "Forced By The Flames" from 2014. Now, with the new album "Spectres Of the Night", the band have cleaned up their sound a little. But if you want to experience the dirtier sound, the EP is included also. The bass guitar rhythm begins the title track and permeates throughout, thumping like a blitzkrieg as the classic Metal guitars evolve into a thrashy style reminiscent a little of ASPHYX. The bass is prominent on the album tracks, as they all but fade into the background on the EP. Iron Desecrator’s voice reminds me of Larsson from STYGGELSE, a throaty, grimy, meaty array of vocal angst. ‘White Fire Rapture’ is just a bully of a song, taunting and threatening as it barrels its way into our abdomen. ‘The Sign Of Mayhem’ is just that… a chaotic track with a little MOTÖRHEAD thrown in for good measure. ‘Trapped And Nailed’ is a filthy mess that would make Cleveland’s MIDNIGHT proud. I mean, these tracks crawl out of the sewers on all fours and plunder the night with bloody, bestial fury. ‘Bastard Cult’ throws in more bass guitar that’s in your face, as the drums deliver hammer-blows and the guitars bludgeon defiantly. And then there’s the VENOM cover ‘Live Like An Angel, Die Like A Devil’. INFERNAL ASSAULT can channel any huge influence and fucking make it their own. The "Forced By Flames" EP kicks into gear with ‘Black Vomit’, a less produced, yet monstrous array of kick-ass Metal. ‘Dark Lust’, along with the rest of the EP, keep the basslines in the background as the guitars take control and spit their decayed seed into the mouths of succubi. ‘Horned Plague’ is a similar track, and that isn’t a bad thing. This EP reeks of putridity. And finally there’s ‘Coven Of Darkness’, a slightly different track at the beginning that soon after hurls headlong at breakneck speeds into the fiery pits of Hell. Goddamn, this band knows how to punch us in the throat before feeding on our entrails. Here’s hoping INFERNAL ASSAULT deliver another album quicker than it took for this to be released.
