KATAGORY V returns with “Awaken A New Age Of Chaos”, a powerful comeback for the Utah Metal veterans after a near-decade hiatus. Founded by bassist Dustin Mitchell, the band’s journey, rooted in early FATES WARNING and QUEENSRYCHE, paused in 2014. Now, with “Awaken A New Age Of Chaos”, they aim to rekindle their amplified bravado. In this latest approach, vocalist Albert Rybka (ACRACY, EMPYREAN SANCTUM) makes a return and while earlier albums like “Present Day” (2001) and “Hymns Of Dissension” (2007) had a classic, meaty drive, Rybka’s approach on this new record often channels a “Ripper” – esque style. He alternates between a lower pitch and piercing falsettos, which, while powerful at times in ‘Empire Of Ignorance’ or ‘Prophet Of Sorrow’, can disrupt the flow of mid-tempo tracks like ‘Legacy In Blood’ and ‘Night Wing’. Despite these vocal choices, KATAGORY V’s tight rhythmic chemistry shines through. Tracks like ‘Absolution Divide’ deliver classic Heavy Metal dynamics, while explosive ‘Blood Siphon’ boasts an ICED EARTH – esque gallop and blistering Thrash energy. The band truly excels on progressive pieces like ‘Through Fate’s Eyes’ and ‘Escape To Beyond’ evoking the sweeping Heavy Metal of FATES WARNING. This says enough that this album is a solid addition to their legacy, offering a thoughtful collection of riffs reviving the classic era Metal sound, infused with Thrash and Speed elements – which has a dynamic balance between aggression and intricate songwriting. The striking cover art by Ed Repka Illustration sets the tone for an album that feels like a spirited callback to the band’s early days. It’s a strong statement from a band that deserves greater recognition, and their partnership with High Roller Records should help bring this potent release to a wider audience.
