Midnight In The Garden Of Tragedy

LE MORTE is a two piece Death / Doom band from Richmond, Virginia. The band sounds interesting, a mix of traditional Doom coupled with punkish touches of Black Metal. Do you remember that sound of DARKTHRONE with a Punk edge? Tone that down by adding layers of raw vocals and heavy distortion and we’ve got LE MORTE. I heard this a few times, even though I didn’t full agree with the vision of the band here, I always found something that clicked. Mostly it were the passages of unbridled distortion and some Black Metal screeches that seemed rather pleasant to the ears. “Midnight In The Garden Of Tragedy” has interesting ideas, but these ideas need further refinement in my opinion. This is the sound of a unit that’s wading through an uncertainty which needs further direction and I’m sure LE MORTE will stumble upon a path that further enhances the spirit of their sound. Anyway, track #3, ‘The Tower’ stands out on this album, it is a through and through love letter to age old AUTOPSY that any traditional Death Metal fan will appreciate, even though it’s a straightforward track, the band does it with such ease and precision, it certainly needs to be called out. The next piece, ‘Sanguine Repose’, an eerily soothing interlude, acts as a gentle respite to the madness. Right after, we move to ‘Gothic Architecture’, which is oddly reminiscent of PARADISE LOST’s sound on “Gothic”, which is an absolutely delightful experience. In conclusion, LE MORTE seem to have a lot of good ideas and they seem to draw from respectable inspirations, I hope they streamline their vision for better focussed output in the future, I’m sure they will.
