LUCIFERICON
The Occult Waters

A new Dutch Death squadron has emerged from the netherworlds, with a lot of rumors going on who is hiding behind the different instruments. People who are or have been roaming in bands as PENTACLE, DESTROYER 666 and MALICIOUS DREAM have been on the table, without anything getting confirmed. Not that it matters who is doing what in the band, or what their reputation is, as the deeds of LUCIFERICON can speak for themselves. Midpaced mystical Death Metal, droning guitars with a mystical and eerie tone to them, together with icing Black Metal inspired riffs, taking us back to the cold and blazing winds of Scandinavia back in the days. The guitars on this mini album are overall very well performed, some good and catchy base riffs, good shifts and some good solos, just take the one in ‘Azazel’s Torch’ or the one in ‘The Temple Of Lucifericon’, right up my alley. The overall dark atmosphere that smothers the music on this release, is so fitting into the occult universe of LUCIFERICON, and the Death Metal excess we are getting served. The drumming is precise and to the point, not all that tight, but it fits the atmosphere so well. The growl is delivered grim and slowly, you can’t avoid to pay attention to the quite laid back, though very intense and pronounced delivery. I like Death Metal in many forms, though the back to basic and straight to the point is my favorite. Dark and churning, brutal and drawing, grim yet catching, simple but still with enough twists and turns to make it interesting and lasting, and then the dark and intense atmosphere. Music that doesn’t latch onto emotions doesn’t work, and this hits more than one area. A nice debut from these Dutchmen, and some music that has sparked longings for more material from these guys, in the same vein or close at least, if I have a say. LUCIFERICON
The Occult Waters
(self-financed)

Emerging from the the depths of Dutch Hell, LUCIFERICON comes along with their self-financed debut EP "The Occult Waters". No information can be gathered about this band, not even the number of musicians (well, the band features 4 members or ex – members of DESTROYER 666, PENTACLE, MALICIOUS DREAM and EXCISION – Frank). So I can only tell you something about the four tracks (plus one intro) on the EP. And, being honest, it doesn’t re-invent the wheel, but having given the songs a few more run-throughs, I think they are worth listening . The opening track ‘The Temple Of Lucifericon’ reminds me much of MORBID ANGEL, "Covenant" – era, before ‘Moon Over Fading Statues’ enters with a slow paced melodic intro in best tradition of DISSECTION. The guitar playing here reminds of Jon Nödtveidt as well. Definitely a like here, as well for the following ‘Azazel’s Touch’ with a little more old school Black Metal feeling in the harmonies. The final ‘Deathtongue’ is the only downer here, sounding a little random and uninspired.
