Formed in late 2020 by David Nilsson, vocalist of the Swedish Death Metal formation FERAL, MACE ‘N’ CHAIN is a one-man project. The band has followed up on their debut demo “Upon The Anvil Formed” with their debut full-length record titled “Among Ancient Pillars”. Like the band name suggests something epic and ancient, the title of the debut reinforces this assumption along with the archaic artwork, only promises enticing things to rush in. While the guitar and bass are particularly worth listening to from the very beginning of ‘Bloodied Talons’, you will get more involved with the singing of David Nilsson. In terms of expression raw, epic and thunderous, it’s faithful to Epic Heavy Metal legends. Though, tracks like ‘Defying The Gates’, ‘By The Peal Of Thunder’, ‘Labyrinthian Black’ and ‘Mound Of Ashen Skulls’ may not convey the epic brilliance of Epic Metal legends but the essence and inspiration are there to complement the olden tales of myth and fantasy, literature and the works of JRR Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, Robert Jordan, Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft. David Nilsson, who like a force covered all instrumentals, also incredulity gathered multiple Swedish musicians to contribute guitar solos on six different tracks. Certainly, this added quite a blend of transitions on those tracks and makes the listening interesting. “Among Ancient Pillars” is available via No Remorse Records and should be noticed by the followers of MANILLA ROAD, HEAVY LOAD, CIRITH UNGOL, ETERNAL CHAMPION or VISIGOTH.
