The history of the city of Bratislava in Slovakia was shaped by numerous ethnic groups and cultures with different emphasis, such as Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Avars, Hungarians and Slovaks. Enough material for Black Metal outfit MALOKARPATAN, who come from this very city and have been dealing with local historical topics since the band’s founding back in 2014. “Vertumnus Caesar” is already full-length number four, accordingly there are four split EPs, a box set with their first three albums on vinyl and one EP. The band is pretty active, which you can hear in the music. The songwriting is balanced and well thought out. In particular, the use of keyboards / synthesizers, which has caused many Heavy Metal bands to fail, fits seamlessly into the overall work of art. But also clear singing / chanting and acoustic guitars are not only used for their own sake, but also have a permanent place in the song. On the whole “Vertumnus Caesar” is Black Metal, but it has clear hints of Folk Metal. At times it even becomes really progressive towards classic Hard Rock. If you add in the many melodic riffs that would suit any Power Metal band, you get a pretty wild mix. But it works really well. Of course you have to listen to the album a few times, but if you do not shy away from the effort, you will be rewarded with three quarters of an hour of the most versatile, interesting and joyful music.
