“Observable Continuum” is the debut full-length from the Bangladeshi Death Metal trio NAAD. The album, self-released with a mere 19 physical copies (a testament to their DIY spirit, though one wonders about the tiny number). The album’s title and artwork hint at a deeper concept, reflecting the band’s name, which signifies all forms of frequency. This is further explored in the music, which blends elements of Death Metal and Black Metal, with intent of creating a sound fullest of intense and dreaded atmosphere. While not overly technical or breakneck brutal, the music has a compelling, almost transitional quality, embodied by the chaos and energy of their sound. The record has a total of seven tracks and ‘Spurned by Time Placid Vortex’ kicks things off with hooking melody and appealing riff that immediately grabs the attention. However, the second track can take ears by surprise, an instrumental piece featuring flute and tabla. This inclusion adds a spiritual and reflective dimension, displaying the band’s versatile influences and adding depth to the overall experience. It also highlights the skills and quality of musicianship, especially from Aryan Shrestha, who manages guitar, vocals, bass (on some tracks), flute, lyrics and mixing and mastering duties. Simply listen to his Tom G. Warrior – esque vocal throwups, that spread menacing energies throughout the album. The following tracks, including ‘Placid Vortex’ and ‘Crepuscule Ascension’ further intensified the formed atmosphere. The record ends with ‘Ambivalent Constraints’ and native tonged ‘অদৃষ্টে সাকার’ leaves with a feeling for few more returns. Despite limitations of local recording facilities and the band manages the production itself, the album’s quality shines with strong riffs, immersive melodies, charred vocal, blended bass lines and well-executed drum patterns. The raw sound adds to the album’s appeal, giving it a gritty, underground feel. It is clear that NAAD possesses a strong musical vision and deserves opportunities to refine their sound with better production and label support. Having said these, “Observable Continuum” is a solid first step for NAAD. It is an album filled with passion, creativity, and the band’s potential are unmistakable. This release offers an interesting listen for fans of Death Metal and those interested in discovering new forces from the Bangladeshi Metal scene.
