I have not heard a NAPALM DEATH album since…since a lot of time I am afraid. If in any doubt THEY ARE the creators of Grindcore. And they created the perfect Grind album with “From Enslavement To Obliteration” one piece of Metal history I am proud of having in its original vinyl edition including the 7” EP. And yes, they DO turned a lot to be a Death Metal band at least in sound with “Harmony Corruption” but I also think that was done on purpose by their label as Death Metal was doing big time… and do not get me wrong, I love that album too, it is probably also THE best Death / Grind album ever… but something happened and I totally lost interest in the band… probably the last time I ever heard an album of theirs was “Utopia Banished” although I think I once heard “Fear, Emptiness, Despair”… but we are talking almost 20 years since I was interested in the band… now that I make memory I saw them a couple of times live and they already had some more new albums… the thing is that although I like Grindcore I take it in small doses… the style is quite limited if you ask me and only a handful of bands are able to do it the right way… but for a while they seemed to be not interesting anymore, with probably no reason for it. I would say bad marketing, the passing away of Jesse Pintado or juts bad luck with some old fans like me. Now I am faced with this new album. I didn’t even know they were using their old logo again… yes, I was THAT disconnected with what the band was doing… and the cover art reminds a lot of their first two albums. So, armed with headphones I pushed the play button… and the final result is quite devastating! Yes, they are in top form, and do sound brutal and angry! At times, some of the start-stop riffs seemed a bit out of place, as some more “normal” vocals here and there, but overall this is the NAPALM DEATH we all love with references to “From Enslavement…” and “Harmony Corruption” with a lot better result, a lot better musicianship and I will add with a more mature anger that is increased. Although they keep their songs short and to the point, they are able to come up with killer riffs. Yes, they still do sound like a Grind / Death Metal band although the lyrics still remain more about every day life, power corrupted leaders and the sick society we live in. This album made me to go back and check some more recent releases, and I must say they are all quite consistent… still I am left with the taste that one way or another the band (or must I say their previous labels) were doing things in a way that were not exactly the best to keep some of their old fans in line. But , for what this album means, they have again regained the faith of an old fan.
