Brazil has always been a country with a great scene for extreme bands. Starting with extremely fast Hardcore bands like RATOS DE PORÃO or OLHO SECO in the early 1980s, it didn’t take long until the Thrash Metal wave reached the land and spawned bands like SEPULTURA or SARCÓFAGO in the mid 80s. Since those times, Brazilian Thrash seems to be a trademark, more or less. NECRONOMICON BEAST from Jundiaí, São Paulo is another band to share this trademark. Even though they’re active since 1999, "Sowers Of Discord" is only their second album after a more than eight year break filled with two demos and an EP. Now Doomentia took charge and unleashed this Thrash monster upon mankind. From the opener ‘Antichriste’, NECRONOMICON BEAST kill with raw and scabious attacks which are deeply influenced by SLAYER. Doubt that? Listen to ‘We’re Against’ or ‘Warfield’. But they also have distinctive Hardcore Punk influences (especially some of the shout-along choruses) and a feeling to spice their assaults with melodic moments (‘The Fourth Reich’, e.g.). Even influences from Black Thrash bands like DESASTER are to be found, just listen to ‘Oração Ao Diabo’. Moreover, "Sowers Of Discord" has a little, pretty refreshing exotic touch, due to the accent in the vocals and the fact that some songs and passages are sung in Portuguese. As a final Brownie point, NECRONOMICON BEAST thrash along pretty reckless here, making "Sowers Of Discord" very enjoyable even for someone like me, who thinks the glory days of Thrash Metal are gone.
