If I wouldn’t have been familiar with NEPHASTH yet, I would probably have expected a Black Metal band here. Logo, coverart and the album’s title – everything completely leads you into a wrong direction. But even though this Brazilian fourpiece may have a quite blasphemous attitude, they can easily be added to the neverending list of brutal Death Metal hordes that are hailing from South America these days. KRISIUN, REBAELLIUN, ABHORRENCE and now NEPHASTH are basically all of the same kind, playing extremely fast and brutal Death Metal in its purest form. If you should own a copy of the “Brazilian Assault” compilation you will already have an idea what NEPHASTH is all about, as their “The Merciless Face Of Evil” demo (which was also available as a MCD) completely got featured on there. Nothing has really changed ever since – the band still plays the same intense kind of Death Metal, but in comparison with the aforementioned countrymen, still didn’t manage to completely convince when it comes to the production side of things. Things could definitely improved in that direction. But all in all this is still a solid foundation for their future activities, so all worshippers of brutal Death Metal should make sure to give these guys their full attention from now on.

This is insane how much Brazil produces one class act after another these days! Maybe the Brazilians have settled Death Metal breeding farms somewhere in their country, I don’t know… Take NEPHASTH for an example: this foursome from Porto Alegre offer us an amazing album, utterly perfect. I was hooked at once by one track included on a French sampler CD and decided to go for the full length without wait. And what a gem “Immortal Unholy Triumph” revealed itself to my ears! I am unable to find a single flaw in this. NEPHASTH deliver hellish Death Metal the Brazilian way, with a touch of Polish mannerism; REBAELLIUN meets HATE if you want. No wonder then the band is represented by a Polish management, that a Polish artist was hired to draw the album cover, and that a Polish engineer did the task of mastering. So one could say that with NEPHASTH you get the best of both worlds, and the result left me speechless! The production of this album is phenomenal, and compliments the ideal way the musical talent displayed by each of the musicians. The two guitars buzz like malevolent insects, while you can hear with painful clarity every single stroke on the cymbals, and I don’t forget the hateful vocals of bassist  / vocalist Fabio Lentino  which are worth the price of the album, I can tell you! Each of the ten songs are equally captivating, it is impossible to stop once you begin to hear it! This is for me the best Death Metal album of 2001 so far. Buy, THIS IS PURE DEATH!
