After a one minute intro (btw, I hate intros), the Scottish NEXION start off with ‘The Final Revelation’, in my humble opinion, the best song off their 5-song self titled debut EP. Next best song could be the epic ‘Under The Earth’, where the band actually manages to keep their intense attack through 9 minutes of music. And yes, this Trio from Hell plays Black Metal, but with enough variation to grab your attention. Some songs have a really good Death Metal influences, going from mid-paced melodic pounding to the hyper fast blast-beats and tremolo riffing. I hate tags (as much as hate intros), but I could say NEXION’s style reminded me of Swedish NAGLFAR’s early albums. Production wise, everything is perfect: loud and aggressive guitars, pounding bass guitar, relentless drums, high pitched vocals and some deep grunts that work very good. The mix is clear, but I think the drums are pushed back a little. Personally, I’ve heard this before, but one can’t deny that this is a really good EP. Fans and followers of the “second wave” of Black Metal will dig this one. No keyboards, no female vocals, no acoustic parts. This is Black Metal as it is supposed to be played: fast, aggressive and raw! More info at www.myspace.com/nexionofficial, www.darkdescent.net
