QUESTION OF MADNESS
The Dark Corners Of The Mind
(Lux Inframundis Productions)
49:09min

Though produced by THE CHASM’s mastermind Daniel Corchado and featuring several current and former members of the band, Death Metal is not what you can expect from Mexico’s QUESTION OF MADNESS but soulful, well-played and at times truly mesmerizing epic Heavy / Doom Metal in the vein of SOLITUDE AETURNUS, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT. Consisting of – to me so far unknown – vocalist Albert Rybka, whose voice strongly resembles the godly Robert Lowe, Julio Viterbo (e.g. SHUB NIGGURATH, CENOTAPH) and current THE CHASM-drummer Antonio Leon and former THE CHASM-member Alfonso Polo, who takes over bass and guitar duties here, the band’s line-up can be seen as a guarantee for quality. “The Dark Corners Of The Mind” is filled to the brim with strong melodies, captivating vocals and excellent riffs that find a good balance between heaviness and groove. Production-wise the album reminds me a lot of SOLITUDE AETURNUS’ mid 90s efforts thus do not expect a over-the-top Andy Sneap sound here, but a warmer, slightly imperfect yet charming and tasteful production. While the album does not offer immediately catchy hits its overall flawless flow and doomy vibe make it an interesting and valuable listen for all maniacs out there hungry for epic, emotionally gripping Metal anthems. It never bores, it never sucks – it’s good in the truest sense of the word and a promising debut. www.luxinframundis.com
