R.I.P.
As Good As Dead
(Repugnant Records)
14:25min

I received this EP to check out and was surprised to hear this came out at the end of 2020 on Brutal Cave Productions, but German Death Metallers R.I.P. were able to have Argentinian Death Metal label Repugnant Records to reissue the album on CD. The quartet consists of members of the bands CHARRED REMAINS and MANDATORY. This is their first EP and it consists of four songs with a runtime of less than 15 minutes. Just enough to give us a glimpse into the genocide the band prophesizes. The EP starts off with the title track ‘As Good As Dead’, bringing in that old school 1990s era Death Metal. The music is crunchy, mid-tempo and heavy, giving homage to the sounds of INCANTATION, OBITUARY, MASTER and ENTOMBED. The production is nice and crisp, it’s got a very clear sound, providing each instrument’s individuality. A nice guitar solo towards the end is the cherry on the cake. Next up is ‘Traumatized’, a solid follow up track that continues the depravity. The guitar hook at the start of the song ignites the gasoline that leads to a mosh-pit heaven of a song. The drums are on point here, not too many fills and providing the precise amount of thunderous echo. Track 3 is ‘Acid Mutilation’, a kickass jam that will have your head bouncing all around. Fast paced and unrelenting with guitars that thrive with solos that cascade over the song, giving it a more personal touch. Wrapping things up is the final track ‘Infected’ and a nice fitting way to end the EP. Continuing with the unrelentless attack musically along with bass and guitar solos that amplify the chaos the song showcases all the elements the band brings to the table to establish themselves as a force to be heard. Considering this EP was released almost three years ago it has aged well and is influenced by the early era of Death Metal. If you are a fan of the old school Death Metal bands, that I mentioned throughout this review, then you will get a kick out of checking out this EP. Definitely looking forward to checking out the band’s second EP “Still Resting” (released in 2022) to see if they kept up with the mind tormenting formula. Give this EP a listen, you won’t regret it.
