REACTOR from the Ukraine (not to be confused with the Swiss Death Metallers, that became SICKENING GORE after their one and only demo release "The Tribunal Above" in 1991 – Frank) are active now since thirty years aleady and "The Funnel" is already their ninth album. They started as a Thrash Metal act and developed from that into a more Death Metal driven direction, before changing again into a more Industrial orientated direction. "The Funnel" from 2015, which gets re-released now via Nocturnus Records, offers eight tracks of Modern Metal, which in my opinion often crosses the borders to Electro and EBM stuff. I have no problems with that style, as I have spent some years in that scene as well before returning to Death Metal and I still enjoy some stuff of that era. The opener ‘End Of Promises’ or ‘Welcome To Bartertown’ show some fine electrical and programming skills and also the songwriting is fine as well, but somehow I miss the red line to know, what direction the guys intend to go. Some tracks are Modern Metal or Industrial, some more EBM and these styles mixed together somehow disturb the listening of "The Funnel". A clear style decision would surely help them writing material they like and reach the right audience. Sure, the guys know how to compose and play music after 30 years, but it seems that they lost the direction, which does not need to be Metal at all. Productionwise there is nothing to complain and also the cover artwork fits to the music, but hopefully they will find a clear solution for their search of a identity.
