Return To Autumn

SAD WHISPERINGS was formed in 1990 (as DESECRATE) and released several demos in the ’80s / ’90s up till their split in 2004. They were a pure Doom / Death Metal band similar to their early inspiration PARADISE LOST with a touch of the Dutch school of Doom / Death Metal like THE GATHERING. The band got signed by Dutch cult label Foundation 2000 (THE GATHERING, GOREFEST) and released their debut album in 1993 called “Sensitive To Autumn”. Their demos from 1995 and 1998 are a natural follow up to their debut (both are featured on this release together with four songs from the band’s self-titled 1992 debut demo – Frank). The booklet on this release contains rare and old pictures, flyers and posters along with extensive liner notes from Steven Willems (Streams Of Ancient Wisdom: The History Of Dutch Death And Extreme Metal). Coming to the release itself, SAD WHISPERINGS play the early versions of Doom / Death that we all love. Think early PARADISE LOST, remove the Gothic elements and have more emphasis on melody using an unending track of synth in the background. The vocals are your regular affair (a tone down to NOVEMBERS DOOM), the keys are prominent and the overall atmosphere is dense and moody, enveloped in layers of synth. Mind you, these are Promos / Demos but the quality and the overall musicianship is top-notch Dutch style! In my view the historical weightage that we assign to such a release is much higher than the overall derived joy out of the music, not to say the band’s brand of Doom / Death is inferior but it is quite alright. However, when I can always play PARADISE LOST’s “Gothic” instead, a record that I love and that sits well with me at any given point of the day or night. Recommended for historical sentiment purposes, give it a shot! You never know how one would like it.
