SHITANGEL returns with their ferocious new EP “Brown Bath Resurrection”. This Burlington, Vermont based group wasted no time inflicting auditory damage. As opening with the searing 2023 single ‘Something Reeks Of Violence’ a ruthless throat-cutting number that immediately establishes SHITANGEL’s signature sound. It reeks of a ghastly, black thrashing tone reminiscent of AURA NOIR and DESASTER, reinforced by the fanatic intensity of early IMPALED NAZARENE. Front-woman Mary, Mother of Shit (What an impressive name!) showcases her remarkable vocal range, shifting between guttural snarls and classic Heavy Metal tinged highs as if unleashing from the bowl of earth. Stylistically, SHITANGEL refuse restraint and the variety on display here is truly breathtaking. Here, they deftly plunged into Punk and Hardcore territory on tracks like ‘Thy Divine Cuckold’, which features a winding main riff straight out of fanaticism before twisting into ARCHGOAT – esque hammer blasts. The ominous, PROFANATICA – esque edge of ‘Convent Cunt STDs’ is then shattered by vicious blasts and rampant drums abuse of Junk, exemplifying the band’s ability to seamlessly transition between tempos and texture. This diversity further demonstrates in the violent Punk storms of ‘Infectifixion’, a maelstrom of raucous shouts and riffing debauchery. The later numbers ‘Audial Carnage’ surely lives up to its name through sheer ruthless tenacity and ‘Whiskey Drunk And Fucking Angels’ has further spawned an even more extremeness. The EP closes with a one-two punch of covers – a rendition of GEHENNAH’s ‘Beat That Poser Down’ and a bludgeoning take on DELLAMORTE’s ’90s Death Metal gem ‘Uglier And More Disgusting’ displays SHITANGEL’s debt to classic extremism. But in the end, it is their own wickedly catchy compositions that will ensure that the band’s name will remain in mind for years to come. With all these “Brown Bath Resurrection” have it all what this group intended to deliver – it is simply great music, plain and profane which surely should spread the name of SHITANGEL far and wide among the US Black Metal scene and beyond.
