SIROLL
Al Gra!
(self-financed)

SIROLL come from the autonomous region of Catalonia in Spain and sing in their native language, Catalan. The title of their fourth album “Al Gra!” literally means “To The Grain!”, which sounds pretty obscure. But looking at the cover, it definitely has some meaning. The music presented by the quintet, however, is less opaque and much clearer. Thrash Metal with a huge influence towards Deathcore. Regarding the Thrash Metal elements we have lots of so-called modern respectively Groove Metal components. From time to time it sounds a bit like genuine eighties Thrash Metal, but it is definitely more PANTERA or MACHINE HEAD. Luckily for my ears, what the band avoids is this fiddly kind of Deathcore, more emphasis is placed on aggression and going full throttle ahead, often refined with one or two very melodic guitar themes. On the one hand, they do not fit in with the aggressive singing, which is more like husk screaming, but perhaps that is what makes it so attractive and distinguishes the band from other typical modern Thrash Metal bands. Eight songs in just under 24 minutes show the approach to songwriting: short and close, there are no unnecessary flourishes. Even if SIROLL’s style does not fit in with the other bands featured here on this site, one should still give it a try.
