Already in August 2002 Swedish brutal Death Metal outfit SOILS OF FATE recorded “Crime Syndicate”, their second full-length CD after the highly acclaimed “Sandstorm” album in 2001. After the departure of drummer Jocke the drum beast many will know from his work with DYING FETUS or MISERY INDEX Kevin Talley joined SOILS OF FATE and he did not have to change his style… not at all! FETUS plus INTERNAL BLEEDING, SUFFOCATION and Texas brutalizers like PROPHECY, DEVOURMENT (Ruben Rosas even does some additional vocals on one song on the album) are the obvious inspirations for the Swedish trio. Low bellowed growls, violent blasting and heavy, groovy breakdowns are the essential elements of SOILS’ sound and especially the production and the dominant drum sound make me think of the good old NY Death Metal style and is something one does not hear too often these days. “Crime Syndicate” isn’t very original but it is a solid piece of brutal Death Metal exercised by people who at least know musically what is essential to this sound. Unfortunately the lame Hardcore, Hip Hop-like “gangsta” lyrics (Quote: “Crazy motherfucker, I’m crazy to the bone”), the shitty cover of SUFFOCATION’s ‘Devoid Of Truth’ and the pretty one-dimensional vocals are significant drawbacks, but fans of the aforementioned bands / styles and previous SOILS OF FATE material should not be pissed of by this.
