Well, this one was a big surprise. Given the name of this band, I was expecting completely different music. But SPLATTERUMS, a power trio from Russia, is a Death Metal band with a noticeable groove oriented side. Don’t get me wrong; there are no weird influences or sounds here. Their music is heavy as a ton of bricks and really dense as the fog. If I dare, I could say their style is a mix of early 90s Death Metal with some late 90s Hardcore. I hope this sounds about right. In “Splatter Metal”, their 6 song 2021 EP (this version includes 3 bonus tracks, btw), these guys dwell in mid to slow tempos. They do have their blast beat outbursts but these are few and far between. These songs showcase a healthy dose of D-Beat, great headbanging parts and plenty of palm muted, staccato riffs. Konstantin’s drum work is very interesting. He is a great drummer, constantly introducing nuances and slightly changing patterns in the songs. Ruslan’s riffing is solid and detailed. He could use a booster going either way: more menacing or groovier. Ivan’s bass provides the perfect bond between guitars and drums, keeping things tight in the rhythm department. Production wise, guitar and bass tones are thick and gritty. The drums are crisp and in my humble opinion, kinda plastic. A more organic / natural sound could’ve helped to make this recording a lot heavier. The mix is top-notch, with Ruslan’s low growls intertwining with the music. And the mastering has enough dynamics to keep things interesting and varied. Overall, I feel these songs lack some identity. SPLATTERUMS is a good, solid band. And this EP is a great example of it. They just need to find their niche and their style and exploit it. Support the band here: https://vk.com/splatterums_metal. And get this EP from their label here: https://vk.com/risenproductions
