SULPHUROUS
The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre

“The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre” is the second full length album by the Danish band SULPHUROUS. It was released by the American label Dark Descent Records in tape, CD and vinyl format during October 2021, so this album is not so recent. Here we have a good example of old school Death Metal in the vein of the ’90s Finnish current (FUNEBRE, CONVULSE, DEMILICH, CARNIFEX, DEMIGOD, ADRAMELECH etc.). The style is simple and monolithic with a constant alternation of slow parts and fast ones. My favourite parts are the blasting accelerations, all enriched by a hammering snare sound, but also the slowdowns are pretty sick, especially when SULPHUROUS don’t fossilize on static melody, but in contrast the song structure is more focused on heavy and chaotic double bass bridges. The production is gloomy, obscure and cavernous with a very low and guttural growling. The AUTOPSY influence is very present in the slow parts. You’ll hardly notice that SULPHOROUS is a duo, because everything fits perfectly with the morbid, horrific and Lovecraftian atmosphere evoked by the killer cover artwork painted by the Italian artist Paolo Gilardi. “The Black Mouth Of Sepulchre” is a competent descent into the goriest and more putrid abyss of old school Death Metal. I just have a suggestion: less melody and more brutality. www.facebook.com/sulphurous-1830777203674450, www.facebook.com/darkdescentrecords
