Switzerland / Greece based Black Metallers TAÄR released their debut full-length “Catharsis Till Dawn” with strict intent to pay homage to the early ’90s. Since their formation in 2022 and led by international members from Switzerland and Greece, Noctus (bass, vocals), Necro (guitars, bass), V.N (drums) and Tlhoc (guitars), their first effort “Catharsis Till Dawn” is a relentless journey through chaos and darkness, driven by frosty riffs, relentless drumming and cavernous vocals. The band’s sound is firmly rooted in old school Black Metal, channeling aggression and atmosphere in equal measure. From the opening eruption with ‘Celestial Carnage’ through to the closing notes, they maintain a bleak and warlike intensity. From there, more onto the record, ‘Feathered Echoes Of Wrath’ and ‘At Depths Of Damnation’ stand out for their sinister melodies and warfare like raw energy, while ‘Perpetual Descent’ offers a brief, haunting respite. The latter part of the record comes with ‘Where Death Stalks Its Prey’, ‘The Impaler’s Triumph’ and the closing title track ‘Catharsis Till Dawn’ will leave you in dire straits and may lure for few more repeats. The production is crisp but not polished at all, preserving the genre’s essential grit. The mixing and mastering work, done at Descent Studio if Athens, surely deserves credit. Having said that, fans of classic Black Metal and the die hards at will find much to appreciate here for the solid songwriting, fiery performances and a cold aura throughout captured strongly. The provoking cover artwork by Belial Necroarts, interestingly gives away the atmospheric resemblance and memorable artwork style of the great Kristian Wåhlin (aka Necrolord) classic cover artworks. Those aware will agree that his cover artworks of so many classic records always instantaneously give the senses of what’s recorded inside and the atmosphere it beholds. Certainly, a befitting visual to pick up and this record also comes with a clear tray, 6-page folded booklet printed on 135 gsm art paper which is now available to grab from revered Soulseller Records.
