In 2010 it has become even more obvious that the illness of the extreme Metal underground – easily summarized as musical recycling – is spreading further. So maybe the perfect time for the next generation of Doom bands like the American outfit THE HOWLING VOID. The band from Texas is offering an extreme majestic and vital version of today’s Doom Metal with strong parallels to the glorious times of bands like MINDROT or other country mates. The one man project was founded by R. anno 2007 and his second creation “Shadows Over The Cosmos” is like a walk through the ruins of an old city with occasionally flickers of fading light. The five tracks are for sure not the abyssal vision of a haunted soul waiting for death, but a musical transformation of melancholy and despair. The album is cornered by two extreme good tracks – ‘The Primordial Gloom’ and ‘Lord Of The Black Gulf’ – which are opening and closing this great album. I can listen to this release several times without losing touch with “Shadows Over The Cosmos” so please be invited to the howling void.
