There’s nothing like a demonic opera to introduce an equally demonic Metal album. THY RITES is a Brazilian band; writing Brazilian Metal the way MX, SARCOFAGO, SEPULTURA and DORSAL ATLANTICA once did. The SARCOFAGO influence is the most distinguished in the drumming pattern, a steady blast beat of the old Cogumelo mold. THY RITES very little in speed; either playing at a mid-paced style, or at a breakneck fury. Instead of the mindless savagery of bands like BLACK WITCHERY, or indeed even early SARCOFAGO, THY RITES are remarkably mature for a band so young. Their songs, though fast, and clearly intended for a Black Metal crowd, are full of variance and melody; melody without wimpiness. Very few bands, in my judgement, are truly able to showcase their taste for melody whilst preserving the heaviness of their music. THY RITES do just that, and it is a beautiful sight to behold.
