The Australian four piece UNRAVEL from the town of Perth in Western Australia is pretty new on the scene. They started in 2015 and were rather busy until now. A demo tape and two 7”es, one of them as a joint effort with ASH MOUTH, already grace their discography. So now, three years after their formation, UNRAVEL are ready for a full length album. Yet, “full length” might be a too strong word here for an album of not even twenty three minutes running time. Nevertheless, “Eras Of Forfeit” has eleven tracks to offer. Somehow this makes me think of at least an influence of Grindcore. And I wasn’t wrong for sure! UNRAVEL present us a mix of Grindcore and brutal Death Metal on their first album. With some added tiny modern influences (that aren’t really favoured by yours truly) “Eras Of Forfeit” turns out to be quite a nice album. The special ingredient on this album is not the speed of light that is often the core of Grind, but the brutal and really grinding mid and down tempo parts, even spiced with some more modern breakdowns. Thus I somehow feel reminded of the stuff NAPALM DEATH did in the last years. Yet, UNRAVEL are a little less based on harmonies and more focused on smashing riffs and grinding rhythms. And this focus makes songs like the opener ‘Arbitrator’, the really short attack ‘Perpetual Servitude’ or the slowly grinding ‘Scorched’ stand out of the masses. “Eras Of Forfeit” should be a real joy for all you Grinders out there.
