Frenchmen UNSU deliver their third EP of grinding filthiness. Naturally, because Grindcore songs are so short, a multitude of tracks can fit onto a small format. I can’t say I’m mightily impressed with this band. First, they use Kilgore’s famous line from Apocalypse Now: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”, for their first song, even naming it, ‘Napalm In The Morning’. No shit, guys! That is easily one of the most quoted movie lines in history and it’s time for a new warcry. And I should say, for their first studio song – that is, one of the 4 songs out of 18 to be recorded in studio. The rest is all live tracks and two NASUM covers. The studio tracks, except for ‘Napalm In The Morning’, aren’t out of the ordinary in composition, but the nastiness in the production evenly balances that weakness. It’s been a while since I heard such enjoyable disgusting sound. The songs ‘Kill Kyst’ and ‘Magic Quartet Of Starfuckers’ best demonstrate this. Interestingly the vocals, which sound annoyingly Hardcore-ish on the studio tracks, sound much better in the live setting. If the band’s intent was to encourage more attendance at their shows with this basically live album, I’d say they did a decent job, for I’d like to see them grind some teeth in live.
