VARGRIMM
Des Wolfes Zorn

The first impression of this underground release is quite irritating because the VARGRIMM debut comes with the full scale of voice over protection. For sure I can understand the ongoing discussions about the new internet music environment but like in the old days you should chose reliable underground partners instead of blaming everybody; but these general issue should not deeply affect this good release. VARGRIMM is – without sounding too negative – a typical German Black Metal act with a lot of Viking / Pagan blood and their first release (ignoring the self-released demo from 2009) is a more than solid start. The backbone of the current VARGRIMM crew is consisting of former WALASKIALF members – a further underground act active from 2000 up to 2007 – and so it’s no really a surprise that the band is presenting a release without any kind of starting problems. Musically the band is heading right into the RIGER (mainly) and MENHIR (partly) territory with a highly aggressive Death / Black basic structure supported by full German lyrics and omnipresent vocals by shouter Kai. Especially songs like ‘Namenlos’ with an interesting chorus and the more traditional ‘Vom Vater zum Sohn’ with a calmer background are the real highlights of this release. The VARGRIMM debut is an interesting release for all fans of the above mentioned bands, and with further ‘independent’ ideas a more than solid release number two must be expected. Let’s see what Odin has in mind for this young band. www.asatru-klangwerke.com, www.myspace.com/vargrimm
