“Void” is the third full length by the Polish atmospheric Black Metal band VARNHEIM and this is their first association with Godz Ov War Productions. At the get-go, VARNHEIM seems to be a straightforward Black Metal band, but as you tend to pay attention to them you realize, this is a modern Black Metal band who build eerie atmospheres and cut through it just as effectively. Although, playing in the atmospheric territory goes hand in hand with Black Metal, VARNHEIM have managed to add in a little something extra on “Void”. Take the bleakness of AGALLOCH, add in the excellent sense of atmosphere of older DIMMU BORGIR, and to it add a sense of mystic aura and you end up with VARNHEIM. Track #2, ‘Onwards’, is the absolute favourite with the band, being their best self and everyone coming together to add in a twist of their own onto the sound. The solo at the end of the track is easily one of the best I’ve heard in the new releases, focussing on pure emotion whilst not fringing into the territory of brutality. Absolutely stellar writing!
