What Sunlight Studios and crushing Death Metal was for the years ’90 – ’92, Dan Swanö’s Unisound Studio and melodic Black / Death Metal was for ’94 – ’96. Both times had its great moments, and the Unisound recordings back then definitely dropped out some classics like e. g. Katatonia’s “Dance Of December Souls”, the Dissection albums “The Somberlain” and “Storm Of The Light’s Bane”, Unanimated’s “Ancient God Of Evil” but also some releases which went rather unnoticed by the crowd. One of these examples is this great release from VINTERLAND called “Welcome My Last Chapter” (unfortunately it came true that this is until now their “last chapter”). VINTERLAND play this kind of melodic Death Metal which all fans of bands like Dissection, Unanimated or Naglfar will worship and they are among the best bands which played this music so far. Here you get everything which you also got from “The Somberlain”, be it the atmospheric parts, melodic guitars in the best possible way, an atmospheric keyboard interlude and a common mix of midtempo, slow and fast parts. All in all this was back then nothing really original, but the quality of the songs are still today on the highest level and for all of you who are missing the days when the first two Dissection albums were released this is the perfect record to fulfill your needs. For me it is a classic in my collection and I don’t mind that VINTERLAND probably weren’t the most original band back then as this release is just amazingly great. As you hardly find the original version any longer (back then released through No Fashion Records), the Spanish label Temple Of Darkness Records decided to re-release this classic now with the bonustrack ‘Freezing Moon’ from Mayhem (the playtime is without the Mayhem-cover as this song isn’t included on my promo version). Let me finish this review with the information that VINTERLAND are now active again and are planning to release new stuff pretty soon. I have high hopes that they may succeed to fill the gab which Dissection left after their departure. They write on their myspace-site “a few songs have already been made for the new album, and this new material is by far the strongest ever”. I hope they’ll prove that they are right pretty soon.
