WAYLANDER
The Light, The Dark, And The Endless Know

Back in our farewell (print) issue #10 I was still praising WAYLANDER’s 1996 demo "Dawning Of A New Age" and considered them a really promising band. And as far as I can recall, the stuff that I heard from their "Reawakening Pride Once Lost" debut full length (which came out in 1998 on Century Media) didn’t let me down either. WAYLANDER were quite effectively combining Irish folk with thrashy Metal and delivered something similar (if not better) to fellow country mates CRUACHAN at the time. But somehow fate seemed to be against this Irish bunch… Due to a whole lot of problems their follow up album "The Light, The Dark, And The Endless Know", which was supposed to be released by Ars Metalli, didn’t see the light of day until now. Plastic Head’s sub-division Blackened Records picked it up and probably made a big mistake in that department. Don’t know whether I was totally deaf a couple of years back or if WAYLANDER had already reached their peak in creativitiy – fact is, that "The Light, The Dark, And The Endless" has become a totally annoying, yeah even quite amateurish sounding release. The musical abilities of the band are extremely low, the songwriting is simple and boring and the vocals suck big time! I hate to say this, but it was a really torturing experience to listen to this approx. one hour long release and apart from a few promising Irish folk elements and a great twin guitar middle section in one of the songs (can’t remember in which I’m afraid…), the entire record doesn’t even match the qualities of those type of bands that are playing their asses off in youth clubs across the country day by day. So, all in all this is nothing but a completely disappointing "comeback"…
