With such a curious name such as WELCOME TO PLESHIWAR, I was really intrigued about this German band. I didn’t look for any information before listening to this independently released EP and all I can say is that this was a more than pleasant surprise. WELCOME TO PLESHIWAR combines atmospheric and melodic influences, merging acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and (seldomly used) clean vocals with solid Death / Doom Metal. After the first spin, it reminded me of (early) THE GATHERING and I also heard some mid era SENTENCED and NECROS CHRISTOS influences. There is a lot happening here. The vocals are really good, ranging from a high pitched shrieks to really low grunts, enhancing the different passages of each song. The thick and heavy riffs are blended with eerie melodies, harmonies and elegant leads. The guitar tone is thick but it works perfectly when things get calmer and more melodic. The bass guitar sound, although relevant, also fuses nicely with the guitars, popping in and out with interesting lines, yet creating a reliable backbone along the drums. And speaking of drums, I love the fact that the drum sound is natural and not too compressed. The patterns, fills and cymbal use are flawless. They really help shape the songs and not only have a rhythm role, but act as an integral part of the composition, especially the contrast between the quiet and dense parts. A well done mastering creates noticeable differences, as the atmospheric parts feel more discreet compared to the harsh, raucous ones. The mix is balanced and manages to keep all the different elements together in a very cohesive way. Performance wise, it is notable that these guys know their instruments inside and out. Each instrument is played as it should be played along the (dare I say) guidelines of the subgenre. The song structure is congruent and not just riffs and parts put together. All in all, “Unsolved” is a strong first step into the underground and I am already looking forward for more material from WELCOME TO PLESHIWAR. I also wonder why this EP has not been picked up by any label, because it deserves a proper and bigger official release.
