Time is a strange experience. So I was pretty surprised that the self-titled debut by WILD BEYOND only has half an hour playing time. That can not be, I thought to myself, it feels more like an hour. In my opinion, the cause of this phenomenon is clearly the amount of riffs that are processed. Since the band from Philadelphia, USA, labels their style as Black Thrash Metal I guess everyone has something in mind like early SODOM or AURA NOIR. But instead on focusing on simple aggression WILD BEYOND tend more towards the complex side of Thrash Metal in the vein of such bands as VOIVOD. Now that is quite an interesting move, bringing together the atmosphere of Black Metal with the technical finesse of progressive Thrash Metal. Does this mixture fit? Definitely yes, although the first encounter with the seven songs (plus outro) is a rather strange experience. It feels a bit confusing at first, but as soon as you play it through the second and third time you realize that the musicians really have a talent for writing good songs. Somewhere in the depths of the internet I recently came across a register that lists (allegedly!) all Heavy Metal sub-genres, that was exactly 407 genres. Well, Black Progressive Thrash Metal was missing, a sign that even after more than 40 years of Heavy Metal, the story is not over yet, so every Metalhead should give “Wild Beyond” a try.
