Buried Amongst The Ruins

I’m sure the ones who like classical Doom Metal in the pure BLACK SABBATH way don’t need any introduction when it comes to such a cult band as WITCHFINDER GENERAL, a band which didn’t get so much attention as others like PENTAGRAM, SAINT VITUS or COUNT RAVEN, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t deserve it. Luckily Nuclear War Now Productions, on their usual tendency of recovering old and obscure recordings from underground bands, released this compilation CD on which we can find, first and most important, the “Soviet Invasion” EP, of which the main song is already worth the purchase of it (with a really cool acoustic part and the typical SABBATHical vocals in the beginning and then turning into a harder and more rocking part). But the two other tracks, ‘Rabies’ and a live version of ‘R.I.P.’ are great too; and then four live recordings from 1981 (‘Satan’s Children’, ‘Rabies’, ‘Phantasmagorical’ – which is unreleased – and ‘Soviet Invasion’) and two tracks from their very first single, ‘Burning A Sinner’ and ‘Satan’s Children’. The production of the studio tracks is quite raw and simple, but this was recorded some years ago and these guys were not a big band which could pay for a wellknown studio, but it is still quite listenable; even the live tracks are not bad at all on this aspect. So, every WITCHFINDER GENERAL freak should be really satisfied with this CD after the live album from ’83 released from this label too. For the newcomers, maybe this isn’t the best way to discover this fantastic band, but I repeat what I said before, the ‘Soviet Invasion’ track is just perfect if you’re into this SABBATHical stuff. www.nwnprod.com
