Having only five songs, the first of which is a short intro under a minute long, “Chaos Marked By Death Of Sun” almost makes it into LP category just barely missing the 30 minute mark. BONE WEAPON’s newest release is a primitive slab of cave man styled Death / Doom Metal under a War Metal presentation (think of the intro that’s a wall of noise creating anticipation, the red and black cover and the low but declarative raspy vocals drenched in reverb and even the band’s name). While the production sounds loud and professional, there are lots of dynamics and noises like the scratching of the pick on the bass’s strings which you can hear on the minimalistic bass break in the intro to the last track ‘Dawn Of The New Blood Sun’, or the guitar feedback which you can hear sprinkled here and there across the whole album. Some of the sustained chords benefit from a bit of feedback too, sounding akin to Sludge Metal or even INCANTATION at their doomiest. This modern production of a very primitive sound makes “Chaos Marked By Death Of Sun” a good candidate for fans of contemporary Black / Death / Grind bands like BLACK CURSE or STRUP. BONE WEAPON pretty much employs all the cool things you could do in the primitive side of Death Metal. Take for example the first song after the intro, ‘Death Of The Sun’: it starts with a groovy riff that might attract fans of UNDERGANG and COFFINS, but after an even slower part of palm muted riffs brings forth some fast skank segments and even d-beat drumming. The more traditional tremolo Death Metal riff on the last track almost sounds out of place after so many touches of calculated primitivity presented throughout the album. I’d like to point out the pitch shifted spoken word at the end of the third track, I’m not sure if it’s a sample or actually performed by one of the band members, but accompanied by the sludge riffing, it’s another nice touch that brings to mind Sludge bands like NOOTHGRUSH or DYSTOPIA.
