This album, the second by A WINTER LOST, is somehow confusing. It’s mainly the fact that this trio sings a lot of their songs in German, even though they come from Canada (and the USA), and no band member has German roots. But all band members have studied the language and therefore they use German, not exclusively as they did on their debut "Weltenende", but still as their preferred language. Musically, A WINTER LOST are devoted to Black Metal, raw and ice cold. This would not that bad if the songs weren’t that lifeless and free of atmosphere like most of the stuff presented here. The opener ‘Des Falken Tod’ sounded pretty nice at the first listening, with the simple, driving drums and the nice riffing. But the next tracks merely just repeat these ingredients ad nauseam, without variation or surprises. It’s not until the second half of ‘Zeichen’ that acoustic guitars made me listen up. But ‘Speergefang’ stagnates again, it even becomes ridiculous with its pseudo epic chorus attempts in the end. After another unimportant song, the title track ‘Die Längste Nacht’ finishes the album as the only really mentionable song. The guitars really sound good, with hints on the fine first album by THE ABYSS and the quiet middle part even features clean vocals and fits very well here. But one swallow does not make a summer.
