Within the last three or four years, a multitude of bands released demos. There’s nothing unusual about that, for bands have been making demo tapes for decades. But what’s striking about the last batch of tapes is the direction the music on those tapes goes in; it goes backwards in time. There’s apparently no such thing as too old school today. Perhaps that means Death Metal is creatively exhausted, and the only thing left to do is worship the golden days. Or, better yet, the thing to do is write music so damn cool, it brings the old days back again. I firmly believe ABHORROT, from Austria, write with the latter mindset. Their music isn’t a mindless blastbeat, but more like the mid-pace set by ENTOMBED and with a cavernous underground sound (hmm… the track that I’ve heard reminds me way more on HELLHAMMER meets old ASPHYX… – Frank). They’ve released two demo tapes: one in 2008, the second in 2009. Although I haven’t heard the first, I’m sure it’s as good as this one. ABHORROT are a band that can only get better. Be on the look out. www.myspace.com/abhorrot, www.myspace.com/terrorghoulprod
