AZATHOTH
Sultan Of Chaos
(Iron, Blood And Death Corporation)
19:32min

Chilean brutal Death Metal trio AZATHOTH has cranked out their first EP following their 2012 debut demo. The fledgling band has been an on again / off again project since 1998 and with the help of Iron, Blood And Death Corporation they have been able to bring their style out to the masses. The EP consists of five tracks with a run time of less than 20 minutes, enough to check it out during a quick lunch break. The intro track was a bit lackluster with nothing major to bring to the table. The chaos begins with the title track ‘Sultan Of Chaos’. A crushing song that is very overwhelming brutality that consumes the ears. The vocals are guttural and harsh with deeper vocals jumping in from time to time to do a bit of a duet. The guitars are non-stop crushing and the bass guitars keeps up with the insanity. The drums are pummeling and get somewhat drowned out by the guitars / bass / vocals. Track 3 ‘Angustioso Andar’ continues the damaging audio assault and has more of a consistent flow. This one does not feel as bombarding as the previous track providing more of a balanced song. The final two songs on the EP, ‘Nibiru’ and ‘Tronos De Fuego’, are where I think you can fully capture what the band brings to the table. The former is the longest track on the EP and has a train running over an 18-wheeler carrying rocket fuel feel. The bass guitar is on point here with the drums providing sufficient support. The later is a blitzkrieg attack that is unrelenting for the full 4:42 minutes. This song continues where ‘Sultan…’ left off and should have been the follow up in the track listing. In summary, the band provided a brutal set of five jams that can fit in any brutal Death Metal fan’s catalog. Musically they bring the right elements to the table and are not bad, but the music does not stand out from other known / established acts currently in the scene. I will need to hear more from them and need to see what they do if / when they unleash a full-length album. Speaking of which if you are looking to grab this on CD you best hurry as my understanding is it is limited to only 300 copies. Happy hunting!
