Sinister Rhythms

Death’n’Roll. I remember that hell broke loose once some Scandinavian bands like ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER and DESULTORY (just to name a few) made this subgenre known to the global underground with their respective albums. Since then, it has been controversial to say the least. Now, BURNING THE BASTARDS’s “Sinister Rhymes” is promoted as a Death’n’Roll album and as a tribute to MOTÖRHEAD. And even though there is some MOTÖRHEAD style in there, I think the Black / Thrash and Death’n’Roll influences are much more noticeable. Now, Jonny Pettersson, Swedish multi-instrumentalist and vocalist is the mastermind behind this album. He single handedly takes care of everything (including the cover artwork) and he delivers not only excellent performances but also some great growling / grunting vocals. The songwriting is simplistic but extremely effective and all songs have really powerful hooks and headbanging parts. The D-Beat, Crust and Thrash rhythm patterns are more present, making “Sinister Rhymes” one fast paced, action packed album that gives no rest to the listener. Production wise, this sounds huge and massive. It’s got a dominating thick guitar tone that leaves little space for the bass guitar, although it is there supporting the pounding drums, which add a lot of catchy patterns. The rhythm section is really solid, although a little too perfect for my liking. It lacks some feel or vibe. I enjoyed the vocals a lot. Johnny showcases a direct but groovy approach to the songs and that provides a different vibe. The mix is balanced and has all the focal points well set and the mastering is the usual for a modern Extreme Metal album with almost no dynamics. But yet again, that’s just old fart me. Although BURNING THE BASTARDS is not bringing anything new to the table, this is a solid album. It’s done properly and it has got everything any respected Metalhead needs. Another admirable piece of work from Mr. Pettersson. Contact the band and get their album here: www.facebook.com/ibdc666
