CATACOMBS
In The Depths Of R`lyeh
(Moribund Records)
72:28min

Extremely slow, heavy and crushing Death / Doom is what CATACOMBS stand for. There is no romance or sorrow or any emotion at all here to be associated with Doom – just vast, downtuned heaviness, guitars creating a massive, almost static foundation slowly rolling, drifting on with glacial determination. Tempo changes occur like in a river meandering, changing its course. Dark repetitive guitar leads, both distorted and clean, appear out of the void and drip like mercury into that throbbing abysmal current, dissolving, transmuting, hovering above. The deep vocals sound like the slowly moving lid of an ancient black obsidian tomb. One vague point of reference may be EVOKEN in terms of heaviness but “In the Depths of R`lyeh” is by far more bleak, oppressing and monotonous. While listening to it, the whole album becomes like one song, a descent. Surely this is not for everyone but those into UNHOLY, DISEMBOWELMENT, SKEPTICISM, ESOTERIC and of course HIEROPHANT (the former project of J. Del Russi) who don’t know CATACOMBS already anyway should check this out. The whole title track can be downloaded at: http://catacombs.black-dimension.com
