Surprisingly twisted, fresh and individual sounding brutal Death deliver CENOTAPH from Turkey on their third album "Pseudo Verminal Cadaverium", which has now been released by well-known extreme music label United Guttural. The band was formed already in the mid-90s and one can definitely hear the experience CENOTAPH have in terms of musicianship and songwriting in every song of their newest effort. The band does NOT explore new boundaries of speed and brutality, but focuses on concise songs and not just chaotic blast orgies, something what has been certainly done enough in the brutal Death or Death / Grind genre. However CENOTAPH are definitely not slow or sound soft, but like the recent material of Canada’s CRYPTOPSY emphasise technique and variation, form effective and heavy songs and avoid losing themselves in monotony by adding some progressive and even melodic elements. Unfortunately the overall very good impression CENOTAPH made on me gets overshadowed by the vocalist, who simply sucks – at least in my opinion. I’m extremely picky about Death Metal vox and I did not like Batu Cretin’s, sorry! Well… that is everything I did dislike, musically CENOTAPH are very strong, the production (done at Mega Wimp, Germany) is transparent and powerful, the cover is great, too (Studio Sho rules!) and maybe the vocals are just another matter of taste… For additional information visit www.unitedguttural.com or www.cenotaph.cjb.net.
