CONGENITAL DEFORMITY is a one man band from Italy. “Progenies Of The Cemetery” is the first release by this project. Originally released as a demo in 2019, the version being reviewed here is the repress by Morbid Chapel Records who’ve released this both in digital and physical formats. The physical copy is limited to 500 copies and comes with a 4 page booklet. What we have here is a fine old school Death Metal worship done quite right. Right from the first moment of the first track, CONGENITAL DEFORMITY is simply aspiring to bring to you dirty, muddy, heavy and riffy Death Metal. My first reaction was that the member behind this project is a huge fan of “Leprosy” era DEATH and AUTOPSY. When you listen to the rehearsal tapes of “Leprosy” from May and September of 1987 you’ll relate to this immediately. The overall approach by the band is just simple, good heavy riffs, chuggy bass and absolutely essential drumming. We need to talk about the drumming for a moment here, you don’t hear this bare bones yet aesthetically appropriate drumming anymore. It’s perfect and sufficient. Track # 2 ‘Crypt Of The Deformed’ takes the sound a notch higher, it gets tighter, the sound closes onto you fully. There are no fancy riffs here, just the basic riffs you’ve heard a hundred times, however the atmosphere with which they’ve been put together makes it a delight. The slower parts are really dark and doomy, they’re easily the best parts on the songs. The mini solos thrown in between are a cross between early DEATH and MORBID ANGEL’s approach, especially the first solo on track # 4 ‘Blood Of The Ancient Dead’ which amplifies the madness. The second solo however binds into the tempo and meanders around it with ease, this is some good writing! I’m happy with the production here, I in fact like it. On the whole there’s nothing new here however, this is a promising debut, it’s doomy leaning back onto an excellent rhythmic atmosphere as a clear tribute to AUTOPSY. The riffs flow through with ease with no sense of hurry. The bass adds in ample depth to the overall sound. The vocals are deep and fit in really well. Packed in with considerable range of influences from the celebrated old school Death Metal icons, CONGENITAL DEFORMITY does make a decent case with this release. Get a copy!
