Collaborations don’t happen all that often in Metal. They happen, but they’re few and far between. Unless you’re CRYOSTASIUM. This fifth collaboration is with Saint Petersburg, Russia’s one-man project ABIGORUM. Of course, CRYOSTASIUM is a one-man project also, based out of Boston, Massachusetts. The melding of two forces is always exciting, allowing both bands to breathe a little into each other’s musical minds. And I must say, "Unholy Ghost Liturgy" is a little difficult to describe. But I’ll give it a shot. The oOpening track ‘Monsoon Release’ starts off with a pounding drum rhythm with a faint chorus floating around in the background. ‘Unholy Ghosts’ takes a u-turn and welcomes in a somber atmosphere with despairing vocals. ‘Liturgia’ and its anguished cries swaying into the mix change the tone again, while keeping with the atmosphere of the album so far. ‘Forgotten Lines’ picks up the pace a little big with classic old school blastbeats and screeching vocals which drop into deep murmurings. ‘Last Galaxy’ is another upbeat delivery before the warped, wobbling the next track, ‘Negative Soul’. So far, quite a selection of dissonance and mind-numbing antipathy… but yet enjoyable. I can go on and on through the twenty tracks on "Unholy Ghost Liturgy", but what you really need to know is that this album is ever changing, ever mesmerizing, sometimes nerve-wracking, sometimes chaotic (‘Frozen Perspectives’), sometimes icy-cold (‘Reflexes Program’) and often experimental. So give it a try. Close your eyes, set the appropriate lighting (not that you can see it because your eyes are closed), and just enjoy the ambience and sometimes harsh atmospherics.
