Good old French Death Metal. It will never cease to amaze me. Not only because bands from this country that play this style are few and far between, but also because usually, these few bands have their own identity. Even newer bands have managed to build their own niche and that alone proves how good French are when it comes down to great Death Metal. Formed in 2014, DEFENESTRATION is such a case. After their debut demo "Ordinary Violence" from 2015, they have just released their debut EP "Gutter Perdition" on the also French label XenoKorp. Right from the start, the overall sound is very reminiscent of the early 90s European Death Metal. After 5-6 listens, I started figuring out some influences, without the band sounding too much alike these. In my personal opinion, their material is a mix between the Death / Thrash attack of their country mates MASSACRA and AD PATRES, Death / Grind elements of early SUFFOCATION and the obscure atmosphere of BELIAL. And even though they are not re-inventing the genre, DEFENESTRATION manages to come through with an original and absolutely enjoyable release for any new or old Death Metal fan out there. Performance wise, I dig Cancrelat’s vocals. They are deep and gurgling, which instantly gave "Gutter Perdition" a +1 in my book. The rhythm section, courtesy of Basstard and Petite Frappe, bass and drums respectively, is really tight and provides the perfect foundation for Apocalyptic Lawnmower’s catchy and manic riffing. The production is really nice: raw and punishing, almost demo-ish, but with a razor’s edge and a honest orthodox vibe to it; beefy and thick guitar tone, crisp bass (with some and outstanding solo parts) and natural, punchy drums that don’t sound too polished. I really like the fact that these guys decided to stay away from that sterile modern production. It does not fit this type of Metal at all. All in all, this is a great EP.; fast and heavy Death / Thrash Metal like it was meant to be played. Especially, check out ‘Blinding Sublimation’ and ‘Akkarian Oracle’. These two songs showcase exactly what DEFENESTRATION can do. This band can only get better. Contact them here: www.facebook.com/defenestration44.
