Mortal Cremation
(Morbid Chapel Records)

As soon as I saw the cover and hit the play button, I had a strong sense of what I was about to hear. Death Metal the way I was expecting it to be: dense, deep, evil. DEFENESTRATION comes from Canada and this release brings together two earlier releases. Their 2023 “Mortal Cremation” EP and their “Promo ’24” into this compilation, still titled “Mortal Cremation”. The order of the tracks isn’t the same as the original release. Whether that was intentional or just how things happened, either way, it works. The songs flow naturally and give a full picture of what DEFENESTRATION is about. And I feel that the band is not trying to modernize or twist the style into something trendy. DEFENESTRATION sticks to the roots, and that’s exactly why it works and makes sense to me. It’s heavy and respects the tradition of this type of Death Metal. The band consists of Steve Dee on bass, Adrian Schroeder on drums, Jesse Weimar on guitars and Ben Neufeld handling both guitars and vocals. The sound they create together is tight and raw, with enough personality to stand on its own. This is not a band trying to be something they’re not. They know the style, and they play it with confidence. Released on CD by Morbid Chapel Records, this compilation is a solid glimpse to hear both of their earlier releases without having to chase down the originals. DEFENESTRATION plays Death Metal with guts. It may remind you of the past, but it’s played with real conviction. That’s what matters to me.
