Speed Metal… Heavy Metal on steroids… that was the way to describe it 20 years ago… nowadays we have tons of stupid and useless denominations for all things Metal… one could easily say this is also a Thrash Metal band, but I will stick just with the Speed Metal tag here… DEMONA comes out from Chile, a land that has a lot to offer in Heavy Metal history… one thing that will immediately get noticed is the vocals and guitar playing of Tanza, a good looking girl who is actually the daughter of an old guitar player from an obscure Heavy / Speed Metal band DISTORSION also from Chile and dating back to 1986… so, Speed Metal has been in the vein of this girl for quite some time… the band itself seems to be more a personal project for Tanza, which was formed way back in 2007. This is their debut album and here she is joined by a few session members, like the drummer of Colombian speed terrorist WITCHTRAP and the bass player of the Canadian Thrashers NO PITY. The names of AGENT STEEL, ABATTOIR, early METALLICA, and ANTHRAX come to mind here and there while listening to this band, which posses a quite good and heavy production and offers a very good execution. While the guitar playing of Tanza is quite very capable, I am afraid her vocals are just not up to the task. This might as well be a matter of tastes, but are probably the weakest part of the band, as can be noticed in the song that gives title to the album, where many guest vocalists from bands like SABBAT, DESTRUCTOR, CARRION and some more makes the song to sound above the rest of the other compositions. A couple of songs are sung in Spanish thus giving credit to their origin land. Still, overall this is a good effort, and if the vocals improve a bit, the overall experience will be more enjoyable. Available also on good old vinyl for those stuck back in 1992. www.facebook.com/demonaspeed, www.dying-victims.de
