“Lord Of Two Horns” is the new album by the American Death Metal band DRAWN AND QUARTERED. A name that rhymes with longevity since this is their ninth full length album, their latest masterpiece in an outstanding career started in 1992 as PLAGUE BEARER. After 34 years two members of the original line-up are still an active part of the band: Kelly Kuciemba (guitars) and Herb Burke (bass and vocals). The line-up is completed by the drummer Simon Dorfman (member since 2013) and the new guitarist Brandon Corsair, that is on his debut with DRAWN AND QUARTERED. After 18 years the band returns to be a quartet, a two guitars line-up that lacked from the 2007 album “Merciless Hammer Of Lucifer”. In terms of production, DRAWN AND QUARTERED return to work with the Greek label Nuclear Winter Records that released a pair of interesting titles from the Seattle combo in 2011 and 2012 (the EP “Conquerors Of Sodom” and the album “Feeding Hell’s Furnace”). Here we have a great example of infernal and vicious old school American Death Metal. Listening to this album means immersing in an obscure trip through the bowels of the most brutal, chaotic, rotten and blasphemous Death Metal in the purest ’90s way. So you have to take as references bands like IMMOLATION, DIABOLIC, INCANTATION, early MORBID ANGEL and DEICIDE. This is visceral Death Metal for old school Death Metal addicted and the best thing is that these guys are not a modern clone but a legendary band formed by real survivors that have had an important role in the scene for more than 30 years. The overall sound production has a monolithic, cryptic and gloomy impact that fix perfectly with the ultra guttural growlings and the guitar tone. The drumming is destructive both on the blasting accelerations and the slowdowns. Dorfman’s style is precise and very fast: a coherent and hammering bombardment that exalts the well structured and intricated guitarwork. Kuciemba and Corsair alternate the use of typical Death Metal melodies, dissonant riffs and twisted solos in an obscure interlacement of feral brutality, blasphemy and sickness. “Lord Of Two Horns” is a morbid call to an hellish invocation that pushes the listener to a unique approach to violent and uncompomising Death Metal. Yes, this is top quality darkened Death Metal played by some of the most inspired and skilled musicians on the scene. You can’t go wrong with DRAWN AND QUARTERED because their formula follows to the letter the rules of the genre and proof of this is the fact that there are no weak points during the eight tracks of “Lord Of Two Horns”. Worthy of note is also the awesome cover artwork painted by Gabriel Byrne that fully reflects the suffocating and bloodthirsty atmosphere of the music.
