As soon as I’ve found out about Seattle’s DRAWN AND QUARTERED, they’ve turned into one of my current fave Death Metal hordes rather quickly. So, needless to say that I was pretty excited when the guys supplied me with a promo copy of their fourth full length album “Hail Infernal Darkness” (thanx Kelly!!) which once again easily lives up to my personal high expectations! Even though there’s an incredible big amount of brutal Death Metal acts around these days, only a handful of them really know to deliver the perfect mixture of this certain sinister feeling in combination with brutality and a convincing songwriting. DRAWN AND QUARTERED have managed to build their unholy creations on the songstructuring / riffing of “Altars Of Madness” – era MORBID ANGEL and mixed that with the straight ahead, brutal and blasphemous INCANTATION style. Almost like the combined songwriting skills of John McEntee and Trey Azagthoth with some vintage SLAYER overtones in the soloing here and there. On top of all that you’re getting this really low, Craig Pillard type of voice, which perfectly suits the whole apocalyptic atmosphere of the record. All of the nine featured songs are of the same high quality, perfectly captured in a rather old school-ish, yet totally professional production. Forget about technical perfection or highspeed blasting with no substance – this is pure blasphemy, pure darkness… this is what Death Metal should be all about! So, if you already enjoyed the band’s previous outputs (or bands of the same kind), there’s no way around this excellent follow up!
